Dune is the first in a series of science fiction novels involving the desert planet of Dune, or Arrakis. Set in a universe dominated by a feudal interstellar empire, where advanced computers are banned, human mentatics are developed, the planet of Arrakis is pivotal because of its production of the anagathic spice melange, which also has mentatic properties necessary for interstellar travel. The novel is complex, interweaving a coming of age story with destiny, religion, ecological themes, and politics.
Won the first Nebula Award for best novel, and jointly won the 1966 Huge Award for best novel with ...And Call me Conrad (This Immortal). Frequently cited as the bestselling science fiction novel of all time.
