A Wizard of Earthsea is a coming of age story about a brilliant young wizard known as Ged or Sparrowhawk in a world where there is no mainland, only an archipelago of islands; where dragons are larger than castles and have an ancient, fell power; and where magic is based on knowing the truenames of objects, and is helpless against the unnamed. The book deals with themes of maturity, pride before the fall, redemption, friendship, and taking responsibility for your own actions.
